Learning to Drive with Autism

Picture
I co-authored this course through Autism Speaks. Their free course covers the basics of driver's education, the steps to get a driver's license and some strategies for dealing with common driving issues for autistic people. Included are video testimonials from me and other autistic adults who took our time getting a license and have discovered how it opened doors to new social and job opportunities. You can find it here along with state guides that cover how old you have to be to get a license, car insurance requirements and opportunities to identify as autistic on a driver’s license:

Consultant: Soutern Connecticut State University
October 2024 to Current
I joined to help provide feedback and outreach services for a research study about autism and listening experiences. I take part of the main study to ensure it is ethical in its procedures and comfortable for those taking it.

Consultation Training Associate: Anderson Center for Autism/ New York
May 2023 to Current
Another venture to be with my good friends at Anderson Center for Autism. Started out as some talks about the consultation team back in January during a resource fair to this route is certainly exciting. I always have a way with consultations and using my various experiences to help empower people. I look forward to help New York providers with my insights.

Consultant: Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
April 2022 to Current
I spoke with CHOP back in 2021 about their research as they were the main people behind research on autism and driving. I kept in contact with them and was given the chance to accept a consultant role for their latest research. It took a while to get my first assignments, but it was worth it, and it gives me a perspective to how research is conducted. While I wished I was able to talk about it more during my Driving with Autism days, this is more of what I prefer.

Past Projects

These were during my days over at Planning Across the Spectrum

US National Autism Events Calendar

Initially created the calendar through Planning Across the Spectrum, but its ownership went to BeMe.ai during 2022. This calendar uses

Autism event calendar (beme.ai)
Routine Traffic Stop Practice for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Southern Connecticut State University, October 2021

I was the driver in the video that was pulled over. I always wanted to do more with this issue, so this was a golden opportunity to make that happen. I still go their other events to speak with families. If you are in Connecticut, be sure to make use of this wonderful resource.

For The Love of Autism

During 2021 to early 2022, I wrote a chapter for this book about my advocacy about driving a car. It was not every day that you get to write a chapter in a collaborative book that featured noticeable individuals in the community like Temple Grandin and Kerry Margo. If you want more information on this lovely book, you can find its page right here below:
