Iowa Autism Driving Resources

I was pleased to find more resources here than I did with other states. The state of Iowa has some healthy schools and programs and one of them by Andy Nelson, I spoke to before and respect his work. Driving Schools:

Safer Driver Solutions: 

Along with their standard driver education programs, they have an individualized program by Andy Nelson that is designed to work with teens and adults with autism. One of their driver rehab specialists will work one to one with students on their needs and assess their driving ability to go forward. They also include defensive lessons in their programs as well. Their special needs program includes those with anxiety and ADHD populations. Payment wise, one of their pages covers funding, which some of the options includes SSI and private pay. 


Right Way Driver Education, Inc. 

They specialize in driver education services over at the Cedar Rapids area. One of their staff is certified as a driver rehab specialist and offers services for drivers with disabilities.   

 
Driven School of Driving LLC 

Offering driver education in the northwestern part of Iowa, they offer a driver rehab version of their program. They have experience working with students on the autism spectrum, ADHD, and those with anxiety. Their head person has a master's in special education and 10 years of experience in a classroom.  

 
 

Non-Driving Schools: 


Adaptive Experts  

This organization has licensed OT staff with driving instructor experience. They have experience working with most disability populations with comprehensive driver evaluation, and behind the wheel training. This school is also in North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.

ID card designation 

Used to enhance communication between the officer and the individual. In person at a center, online, or a kiosk issuance.
