Like the states of Rhode Island and Vermont, I found less resources. However, New Hampshire has at least two noticeable autism resources. It makes the state better than others nearby, excluding Massachusetts. As always, let me know if I am missing any resources by the comments and I shall update this. Be sure to check the other pages of my website. Have a wonderful day! Driving Schools: Exeter Hospital’s DriveAbility Over at Exeter, this program covers both clinical and behind the wheel assessments. Like Rhode Island, there are few providers and schools that tackle driver lessons for the autism population. I was able to find a few thankfully. As always, feel free to provide suggestions in the comment section and I shall take a look at it.
Driving Schools: Upper Valley Driving Academy On the page, it appears as an average driving school. What stood out in my research is that the owner, Richard Kearney is a member of the Assocation of Driver Rehab Specialists. Based on his profile, he provides basic rehab services with some assistive technology included. For those in Newbury, this may be worth a visit to see what they do. Non-Driving School Programs: The University of Vermont Medical Center’s Driver Rehab All of their clinicians are licensed OTs, and the on-road evaluation and training are done by certified driving rehab specialists who are instructors. Their downloadable PDFs for new drivers mention autism and how their program can help that population engage in driving. Other disabilities and conditions they tackle include learning disabilities, visual impairment, and brain injury to list some examples. New Jersey is one of the most noted states for autism services and organizations. It is often noted for having the highest rates of autism in the state. From what I saw, there are more driver rehab programs in non-driving schools than actual driving schools. Still, those programs can still give you a good rundown of what to expect and they could connect you to other places. As I always say, giving it a try is better than not trying. 05/29/2023 Update: Special thanks to Erin White for sending additional programs to me. Exchanging information like this will help more people have the freedom to choose. As described in the main blog on driving resources, this post will cover Connecticut resources on driving. The main problem with Connecticut is that there are few resources available, including a low number of driver rehab specialists present trained in autism and other neurodiverse disorders. For this first main blog, I wanted to do something special for autism and driving. For the autism population, resources on driving are inconsistent in each state. Some states where adaptive driving schools may exist, while you have states like Connecticut where the number of driver rehab specialists are low. Even before all my advocacy efforts, resources were still limited by the state you are in. Some autistic individuals and their families have to work on their own to find a way to make driving work. As part of the new blog section here, I want to do a special project on autism and driving. I am creating a list of driving schools and other resources state by state.
Each state blog post will cover the following resources ranging from driving schools, providers, pages, laws and other projects that relate to driving. With everything listed, it makes it easier for autistic individuals and their families to get a head start in finding the right program for their needs. These pages will actively be updated soon when new providers and other resources appear. I want these pages to be current as possible, so all of you can make a strong decision! Here is the list of current blog posts that are up there. In good times, more pages will be coming up. Bookmark this page to keep up with updates. Feel free to comment on the individual state’s blog post if you know of a resource that should be added. Thank you so much for checking out this. 6/29/2024 Update: Added a new section: Research Studies States: Alabama Alaska Arizona Arkansas California Colorado Connecticut Delaware Florida Georgia Hawaii Idaho Illinois Indiana Iowa Kansas Kentucky Louisiana Maine Maryland Massachusetts Michigan Minnesota Mississippi Missouri Montana Nebraska Nevada New Hampshire New Jersey New Mexico New York North Carolina North Dakota Ohio Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Carolina South Dakota Tennessee Texas Utah Vermont Virginia Washington West Virginia Wisconsin Wyoming Other: Research Studies Books If you are interested in checking out my main website, this is the link to go back to home menu.
