Virginia Autism Driving Resources

Like Maryland, Virginia has a good amount of autism resources in relation of driving programs. I contacted the Driver Rehabilitation Center of Excellence before last year and liked what I saw with their work. Anyway, message me or comment below if there is a resource you want me to add. Driving Schools:

 

Colonial Driving School 

They have general driver education services like teen and adult programs, private driving lessons and driver improvement clinic services. While at usual driving schools, they did blog posts on the topic of autism. Their instructors are noted for having experience teaching students with autism and other disabilities.  


Convenience Driving School 

Over in the Bristol district, they are the only one that are certified in driver's rehab services in that area. They handle all of the clinical/behind the wheel assessments and evaluations to provide recommendations to new drivers going forward.  

 


Non-Driving Schools: 

 

Wilson Workforce and Rehabilitation Center 

Their OT department does several driver services including evaluations, learner’s permit classes, driver training and adaptive tech training.   

 
Driver Rehabilitation Center of Excellence 

They provide general driver rehab with some standout services. There is a driver evaluation which consists of a clinical exam of your abilities and behind the wheel sessions to provide recommendations. They tackle adaptive tech and other specialty vehicles services where they help you select what vehicle is best for you.  Their webpage contains many resources and have individual pages on conditions like autism.  


Capital Driver Rehabilitation Consultants 

They are a driving school that serves all of the state. Their driver rehab services include driver training for teenagers, clinical assessments and evaluations. Autism and other disabilities and conditions are mentioned on their main page. Payment-wise, they encourage families to contact their main office to get more information.
