8/8/2024 Update: Added a new driving school. Driving Schools: Maxwell Driving School This driving school has a page on autism. Their program is designed by autistic individuals and their parents. They believe parent involvement is important for students to succeed. The pace can be flexible for each student. Classroom portion is 10 days (about 1 and a half weeks), 3.5 hours each day for the total 35-hour classroom hours. dRiViNG AuTiSM Located in Atoka, this school focuses on driving training for those with special needs covering both teens and adult age lessons. Lessons considers each driver's need with use of simulator to learn driving techniques. Financial assistance is accepted by the Tennessee vocational rehab services and insurance companies can deliver discounts once the driver completes a defensive driving course. Non-Driving Schools: Pi Beta Phi Rehabilitation Institute This institute covers evaluations that review the potential and skillsets of individual’s driving abilities. All of their staff are certified in driver rehab and provide an individualized plan for each person. Driving Solutions of Tennessee, LLC They provide the following clinical and behind the wheel evaluations in order to give recommendations to you if driving is an option for you. Specific Individuals: Nancy Ramsey [email protected] Nancy is an occupational therapist and certified driver rehab specialist in Nashville. She works with a large number of students with autism. Driving Schools: Heights Driving School Inc. This driving school has a page on autism and on other disabilities as well. They have a clinical evaluation that focuses on visual perception, divided attention, and reaction time. A behind the wheel evaluation is also present along with an identification program. D & D Driving School Licensed by the Ohio Department of Public Safety, this school provides driver training for individuals with disabilities. Having numerous memberships to ADED and The Driving School Association of the Americas, they have 2-hour private lessons for individuals, and they can come pick them up with an extra fee that disclosure their prices on the website. Non-Driving Schools: Driver Rehabilitation Center of Excellence They provide general driver rehab with some standout services. There is a driver evaluation which consists of a clinical exam of your abilities and behind the wheel sessions to provide recommendations. They tackle adaptive tech and other specialty vehicles services where they help you select what vehicle is best for you. Their webpage contains many resources and has individual pages on conditions like autism. MetroHealth Driver Rehab Program They have been serving people with disabilities since 1990 to help them achieve independence. Their services include evaluation, rehab driver training, and vehicle modification consultation. Payment wise, they work on you to see how insurance can pay for their program. Kettering Health NeuroRehab and Balance Center They tackle clinical assessment, road assessments, and driver training to help an individual know if it is safe to drive. Their 6-minute video mentions autism along with learning disabilities as a population they work with. Payment wise, insurance does not cover the fees of this program. University of Toledo Medical Center Their certified driver rehab specialist provides clinical evaluations and road assessments to help assess new drivers on their next steps. Autism along with ADHD and learning disabilities are mentioned on the site. No word on payment fees, so you would have to call or email them to obtain that information. Driving Schools: ADRS Lakeshore This rehab program helps people with disabilities gain the skills needed to get employment and college. Their driving program includes clinical driving assessments, behind the wheel training, vehicle modification, and permit training. They were also accredited by Council on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, which aims to provide quality series to disability populations. Customers who use the Lakeshore vocational services can access this program for free. Non-Driving Schools: Therapy Achievements LLC Along with their physical, OT, and speech therapies, their OT services include driver rehab. Their driver rehab services include both clinical and on-road evaluations and adaptive driving training for those who could use technology to help them drive safely. The Easterseals Rehabilitation Center Northwest Alabama They have a staff member who teaches financial literacy and driver permit classes over there. Initiatives: Autism Identification card Created by the Autism Society of Alabama, this card can assist interactions with police officer and first responders. While no Florida in terms of scope of resources, Georgia does have a good amount of driver rehab programs. Driving Schools: Barbar's Driving School Located in Columbus, they run a driver rehab program to help out new drivers who want an individualized training program because of their disability. Programs cover regular driver education, defensive driving, and even hosting the state road test. Their certified comprehensive driver evaluation service helps individuals with autism, ADHD, and other disabilities. They mention all these populations on their main rehab page. Said page also provide detailed steps to showcase an evaluation at work. Price is mentioned in their FAQ on the bottom of the page. Non-Driving Schools Emory Healthcare: Outpatient Rehab Services They have a program called Driving Solutions which is done by an OT. It helps drivers with driver assessment, training and adaptive tech recommendation services. Freedom & Mobility Provider of driver rehab services in Atlanta, Georgia. They do driver evaluations to assess new drivers, driver training and adaptive services. It takes about four hours to complete the evaluation and a recommendation is made to the individual for the next steps. Driver training covers various skills like lane changing and other defensive driver techniques. You can schedule a consultation by calling their main phone number. Shepard Center This medical facility offers adapted driving series for people with disabilities. They handle evaluations from van driving, high tech van driving, and driving a regular vehicle. Payment-wise, they accept insurance and other forms of payment. Recommendation would be to call their office to be sure your insurance covers it. Easterseals Serving Southern Georgia and the Big Bend of Florida Within their vocational services, driver education is included in a classroom setting. The state department of rehab pays for these classes. Easterseals Middle Georgia Within their program, they offer basic driver education courses. Initiatives: ID Card for Persons with Disabilities ID for disability symbol, medical info, and transportation indicators. This state seems to be on the modest side in terms of driving resources. Having done a lot of research in other states during Memorial Day weekend, this is better than what I saw in other states. *August 17th Update: program added. * Driving Schools: A&A Driving Schools This driving school has 50 plus years of experience with certified staff members as driver rehab specialists and have ADED membership. Services include behind the wheel evaluations, clinical pre-driver assessments. To qualify, you need a physician's prescription, meet state laws for licensing and being seizure free for six months. Payment wise, you can use funding sources from the Michigan Rehabilitation Services and worker compensation. Non-Driving Schools: Drive Able Cynthia Burt created Drive Able to provide driver rehab services in the Detroit area. Her general services include clinical assessments, driver readiness evaluation, driver rehab training, and alternative transportation consultation. Requirements to getting services is like A&A Driving School where you need a physician's prescription. Funding sources are also the same along with the addition of using insurance. Drive Well They offer both clinical and behind the wheel evaluations to help new drivers know the best route for them going forward. Driver training is also offered to do an hour and a half session to help people learn safe driving skills. Pricing wise, they have a “make an appointment” page that lists all the programs and prices, even including programs with insurance considered. Beaumont Driver Rehabilitation They provide new and experienced drivers with their evaluation and training programs. It is conducted by an OT who is a driver rehab specialist. The assessment goes over the physical and cognitive aspects, while going over any driver history as well. To enter, an individual must meet a series of requirements like being age 18 and physician referral. Payment wise, there was no prices mentioned, but it depends on the service and number of sessions. Initiatives: Autism designation in ID card It alerts officers that someone is autistic during a situation. Designation is optional. I was impressed by the balance of driving schools and non-school programs compared to other states I have seen in my research. Even some impressive state programs, which I do not often say. Driving Schools: Montgomery College's Driver Education They run a driving school and one of the more interesting things about it is that they offer a version that includes staff with special education certification. They offer accommodation like smaller class sizes, using a multi-sensory approach for driving lessons, and extra time for individuals taking their tests. Division of Rehabilitation Services, Maryland The DORS Workforce & Technology Center offers driver education for individuals with disabilities, including autism and the staff is certified OT with rehab experience. They have two versions for autism and for general disability populations. Each follows the general driver education that schools go through in the state. Each person gets some additional lessons to help new drivers understand the material better. Rehabilitation of Frederick Located in Frederick, they are a fully ADED certified program in the state. They provide driver evaluations, full driver education program by the state, and assistive technology/vehicle consultation services. No word on the pricing, so you would have to contact them. Non-Driving Schools: MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital Over near the Washington side, they help new and older drivers with driver training. They do both clinical assessments and behind the wheel evaluations in order to give the report and recommendations for next steps. Driver simulator and road test prep are additional services one may take with this program. Pricing was not mentioned on the website. Other Initiatives: Montgomery County Police They have autism/IDD, Alzheimer's, and even Dementia outreach programs in their departments. They have regular police training with collaboration of self-advocates to make sure officers are top of things for interactions. They host regular events to help prepare individuals for being safe in the community. There is a follow up they do with caregivers in case of a call they get, along with providing safety kits for the community. Pathfinder for Autism’s Howard County Traffic Stop Practice Sessions Like Connecticut’s program, these sessions help drivers know what to expect during traffic stops. There is a viewable 1-hour webinar on this topic there and pathfinders do in-person events throughout the year. I am happy that there are options that people can pick for resources like going from general driver rehab to a skills bootcamp. Driving Schools: Remedy Driving School Located in Charlotte, they have certified instructors who are trained in working with the autism and ADHD populations along with those with anxiety about driving. Their general services include a set amount of classroom and road lesson hours with a DMV refresher course as an individual option. Their driver rehab package plans include an hourly plan and a non-clinical evaluation. All of their services have their prices listed. Non-Driving Schools: Driver Rehabilitation Services Their services include individualized intervention, and driver evaluations. Disability profiles are those with autism, cerebral palsy, and other physical conditions. East Carolina University: Driving & Mobility Boot Camp I contacted Dr. Anne Dickerson some years ago in the beginning of my driving advocacy and found the idea of a bootcamp to be delightful. It is a one-week camp where teens can develop skills used for driving and community mobility. The article about it goes into detail about her motivation and insights into why it is important to have this camp. Driver Rehabilitation Services Over in the McLeansville area, they provide a mix of services ranging from clinical and behind the wheel evaluations, driver training, and consulting. Payment wise, they take quite a bit of sources like the Vocational Rehabilitation Services, Independent Living Program, Workers Compensation in state. Private health insurance, Medicaid and Medicare do not cover the cost of the program. Exceptional Driver Services, LLC They are a private company that provides instruction, driver education for teens, and evaluation services. They work with the autism and ADHD populations along with other physical conditions. Their president, Patrick Florio is a special education teacher who has experience working with people for decades. There was no mention of pricing, so you would have to call or message them for more details. Blue Ridge Therapy: Medical Driving Evaluation and Training Program Located in Morganton, they provide in-clinic and behind the wheel evaluations by an OT certified in driver rehab. Jan Stephanides, their specialist has over 30 years of experience and autism is mentioned on the website as one of the populations they work with. Other: Parent Perspective from Autism Society of North Carolina I usually do not post articles on here, but this was well written that I wanted to post it here as a perspective you can read on. Driving Schools: Drive Zone Located in Indianapolis, they provide driver education with specific services. They offer traditional and online classes in their main location. They tend to get a lot of varied people, including autistic students. During the time I ran Driving with Autism, they signed up to be in a partnership to help students in the state of Indiana. They still have a page that listed my old company. Indiana Driving School General driving school that has over 20 years of experience in driving education. They have certified staff in special education to teach autistic students and those with learning disabilities safety driving skills. Non-Driving Schools: Theramobility Located in Fort Wayne, Theramobility provides therapeutic mobility services in Indiana. They help with driving and community mobility, selection of adaptive driving equipment, going over mobility options, and vocational support. They have staff not just in Indiana, but other states like Western Ohio, Northern Kentucky, Eastern Illinois, and Southern Michigan. Payment wise, they are willing to take private insurance and they have other plans incase insurance cannot be used. Assistive Driving Services, LLC Their mission is to provide individuals with disabilities learn driving skills to gain independence. They tackle clinical assessments and on the road lessons to help evaluate one’s driving abilities. The website has no mention of cost of rates to use the program. Optimum Living, Inc They provide driver assessments and evaluation to help assess a driver’s abilities. Autism is mentioned along with ADHD and learning disabilities on their page. The cost of these services is listed as well with no mention of alterative payment options. Oddly enough, they have a young adult program in their main service for OT. Pennsylvania often have rich autism centers and programs and I was able to find some noticeable schools. One I was familiar with years ago before I started my advocacy. October 22nd, 2023 Update: Added Penn State Health Driving Schools: Transportation Solutions Certified by the ADED, they do the standard driving school services, along with OT for individuals with disabilities. Driving lessons review the right of way, defensive driving techniques, and highway driving. Adaptive tech is also present as one of the services. One of the cooler services is that they can provide the driving test to the public, which means you do not have to take it at the DMV. They list all the package plans with the cost listed and you can get one plan that comes with educational videos. Modern Driver Institute This is a private driving school in Pennsylvania that is noted for being one of the first schools to teach autistic students in the state. The school is one of the few on the East Coast that provides cognitive and behavioral training for drivers with various needs. They have a page on autism going over the basics of the challenges associated with driving, and it goes over the background of the instructor, Mike Mercadante. He also has a background in being involved in the autism scene in the state. Payment-wise, they offer assistance through some different plans listed on the page below. Financial Assistance | Modern Driver Institute Penn State Health Driver Evaluation and Training Program Part of their therapy services, they offer a full driver program for individuals of any condition including autism. Clinical evaluations cover various driver skills like vision and cognition and once taken, on-road evaluations can be conducted. This is located over at central Pennsylvania. Non-Driving Schools: UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh, the Center for Assistive Technology (CAT)’s The Road to Independence: Adaptive Driving Program This is a joint Program of the UPMC and University of Pittsburgh. They use clinical assessments and an on-road driving assessment to assess an individual's driving ability. Other than developmental conditions, they handle other conditions such as spina bifida, Multiple sclerosis, and diabetes to list a few. Payment options were not mentioned on the website Adaptive Mobility Services, LLC Located in Orwigsburg, they help drivers enjoy the act of driving, while taking responsibility for being safe on the road. They offer driver rehab services, evaluations and adaptive tech training services. One of the more interesting things with them is that they train OTs to be certified in driver rehab on assessing, general training, and setting up your business. Payment wise, insurance usually does not cover evaluations with only a few exceptions. Roadway To Independence Located in Schnecksville, their services include a driving assessment that covers both clinical and behind the wheel aspects. Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital Located in Malvern, they tackle clinical and on the road assessments to help drivers of any ability obtain driving skills. MossRehab Driving Program Located in both Jenkintown and even in Wilmington, Delaware, this program is certified by the ADED. They have clinical assessments, road training, assistive tech training, and state exam tutoring services. The page has a downloadable FAQ page that goes over most of the information, including payment details. They also have a rehab program that covers disabilities and other conditions with adaptive tech and evaluations. Fearless Driver Located in San Francisco, this school has an adaptive program that covers services for those with disabilities and physical conditions. Apex Driving Schools They offer driving services for any student with a disability and autism is mentioned on their list. Their main instructor has over 30 years of experience and is certified as a driver rehab specialist by the ADED. Payment wise, they have a page that goes over the rates for using their services. Non-Driving Schools: Driver Rehab Specialists Inc Located in San Marcos, this program tackles the classic clinical assessments, on the road evaluation, and adaptive tech training. They also have an occupational therapy service for those who could use help on improving skills relating to driving. Capuchino Therapy Group While different than most providers I have seen, they have a service in regards with driver rehab. They do the evaluations, instructions and advising with the use of adaptive tech. Their staff are trained OT with a background in driver rehab. Autism is mentioned in one of the groups they work with on their website. Payment wise, they accept most insurances, and their page goes over their policies. John Muir Health Located in Pleasant Hill, their adaptive program helps interested autistic individuals explore driving and see if it is a good fit for them. The program covers clinical and behind the wheel evaluations, and training to improve driving skills. Payment-wise, most insurance plans would not cover this, except clients within the state’s department of rehabilitation and worker compensation. DriveABLE Over in the San Francisco area, this is one of the first driving assessment center around. They help drivers with assessing their driving abilities with their DriveABLE On Road Evaluation. L.A. County Health Services They have a variety of services from clinical assessments, simulator training, driver education, prepping for DMV test, and exploring alternative transportation options. Developmental disabilities and other conditions are mentioned on their website of populations they work with. The provider does a driver support group for select Tuesdays for each month. The Casa Colina Adaptive Driving Program Over at Casa Colina, this program helps those wanting to learn driving and those returning as well. Autism is mentioned on their website, and they work with other disabilities too. They help with clinical assessments and evaluations on the road with their specialty van that contains assistive tech. For those not ready for being on the road, they have a Pre-Driver Training Program that reviews all the skills needed for driving. CA Department of Rehabilitation's Mobility Evaluation Program Their evaluation program reviews adaptive driving equipment, car modifications, and training for any client within the department. They also review options for those who cannot drive. Staff is certified in driver rehabilitation, and they have an OT with driver rehab certification. Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital Their adaptive driver program helps those looking for driver and behind the wheel evaluations. To be part of their program, a physician’s referral and permit from the DMV is required. Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center They serve individuals of all ages and with developmental disabilities. They provide pre-driver screenings, behind the wheel evaluations, simulator training, and driver education for new drivers. Staff tend to be OTS, driver rehab specialists, and instructors. Payment wise, health insurance does not cover evaluations and sessions. Smith OT & Driving Rehabilitation Services Located at the North Bay, they work with autism and other disability populations. They provide driver evaluations, driver strategies, training, adaptive tech recommendations, and other recommendations. Staff are certified as driver rehab specialists. No word on any payment amount, so call ahead to get more information on it.
