This state tends to do more with driver rehab than a general driving school. I am happy that there are options that people can pick for resources like going from general driver rehab to a skills bootcamp. I also added a new section for parent perspective as the article I found from Autism Society of North Carolina was fantastic. As mentioned in my other posts, comment below if you know of any additional resources. Thank you for using this resource and have a wonderful day!
Driving Schools: Remedy Driving School Located in Charlotte, they have certified instructors who are trained in working with the autism and ADHD populations along with those with anxiety about driving. Their general services include a set amount of classroom and road lesson hours with a DMV refresher course as an individual option. Their driver rehab package plans include an hourly plan and a non-clinical evaluation. All of their services have their prices listed. Non-Driving Schools: Driver Rehabilitation Services Their services include individualized intervention, and driver evaluations. Disability profiles are those with autism, cerebral palsy, and other physical conditions. East Carolina University: Driving & Mobility Boot Camp I contacted Dr. Anne Dickerson some years ago in the beginning of my driving advocacy and found the idea of a bootcamp to be delightful. It is a one-week camp where teens can develop skills used for driving and community mobility. The article about it goes into detail about her motivation and insights into why it is important to have this camp. Driver Rehabilitation Services Over in the McLeansville area, they provide a mix of services ranging from clinical and behind the wheel evaluations, driver training, and consulting. Payment wise, they take quite a bit of sources like the Vocational Rehabilitation Services, Independent Living Program, Workers Compensation in state. Private health insurance, Medicaid and Medicare do not cover the cost of the program. Exceptional Driver Services, LLC They are a private company that provides instruction, driver education for teens, and evaluation services. They work with the autism and ADHD populations along with other physical conditions. Their president, Patrick Florio is a special education teacher who has experience working with people for decades. There was no mention of pricing, so you would have to call or message them for more details. Blue Ridge Therapy: Medical Driving Evaluation and Training Program Located in Morganton, they provide in-clinic and behind the wheel evaluations by an OT certified in driver rehab. Jan Stephanides, their specialist has over 30 years of experience and autism is mentioned on the website as one of the populations they work with. Other: Parent Perspective from Autism Society of North Carolina I usually do not post articles on here, but this was well written that I wanted to post it here as a perspective you can read on. If you are interested in checking out my main website, this is the link to go back to home menu. Book me for your next autism event.
