Pennsylvania often have rich autism centers and programs and I was able to find some noticeable schools. One I was familiar with years ago before I started my advocacy. I am glad that years later, I can return the favor to one of my origins. As always, message me if you know resources that should be here. Thank you for using this resource and have a wonderful day!
October 22nd, 2023 Update: Added Penn State Health Driving Schools: Transportation Solutions Certified by the ADED, they do the standard driving school services, along with OT for individuals with disabilities. Driving lessons review the right of way, defensive driving techniques, and highway driving. Adaptive tech is also present as one of the services. One of the cooler services is that they can provide the driving test to the public, which means you do not have to take it at the DMV. They list all the package plans with the cost listed and you can get one plan that comes with educational videos. Modern Driver Institute This is a private driving school in Pennsylvania that is noted for being one of the first schools to teach autistic students in the state. The school is one of the few on the East Coast that provides cognitive and behavioral training for drivers with various needs. They have a page on autism going over the basics of the challenges associated with driving, and it goes over the background of the instructor, Mike Mercadante. He also has a background in being involved in the autism scene in the state. Payment-wise, they offer assistance through some different plans listed on the page below. Financial Assistance | Modern Driver Institute Penn State Health Driver Evaluation and Training Program Part of their therapy services, they offer a full driver program for individuals of any condition including autism. Clinical evaluations cover various driver skills like vision and cognition and once taken, on-road evaluations can be conducted. This is located over at central Pennsylvania. Non-Driving Schools: UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh, the Center for Assistive Technology (CAT)’s The Road to Independence: Adaptive Driving Program This is a joint Program of the UPMC and University of Pittsburgh. They use clinical assessments and an on-road driving assessment to assess an individual's driving ability. Other than developmental conditions, they handle other conditions such as spina bifida, Multiple sclerosis, and diabetes to list a few. Payment options were not mentioned on the website Adaptive Mobility Services, LLC Located in Orwigsburg, they help drivers enjoy the act of driving, while taking responsibility for being safe on the road. They offer driver rehab services, evaluations and adaptive tech training services. One of the more interesting things with them is that they train OTs to be certified in driver rehab on assessing, general training, and setting up your business. Payment wise, insurance usually does not cover evaluations with only a few exceptions. Roadway To Independence Located in Schnecksville, their services include a driving assessment that covers both clinical and behind the wheel aspects. Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital Located in Malvern, they tackle clinical and on the road assessments to help drivers of any ability obtain driving skills. MossRehab Driving Program Located in both Jenkintown and even in Wilmington, Delaware, this program is certified by the ADED. They have clinical assessments, road training, assistive tech training, and state exam tutoring services. The page has a downloadable FAQ page that goes over most of the information, including payment details.
